5 tips for a successful move with children

Moving is already a stressful experience, but moving with children can cause even more stress and anxiety. Whether this is your first or third time doing a family move , it’s important to look at the entire process from your child’s perspective and involve them as much as possible.

Our practical moving tips will help you manage moving with children as best as possible.

1. Involve your children in the moving process

If you want to spare your children the stress of a family move , then it’s important to include them in the moving process. Give them simple tasks that they can easily complete.

So you can e.g. E.g. packing a box with toys, tidying up items or closing boxes. Older children can take care of their younger siblings or help manage the to-do list.

When the child feels like they are an important part of the team , they feel less helpless.

Packing moving boxes and moving boxes should be fun!

If you really make a game out of it, it will be even more fun for the littlest moving helpers . If your child is a baby or toddler, you should explain to them that all of their belongings will be taken and nothing will be left behind. You can use dolls, stuffed animals, or toys to act out the parade with children .

2. Explain why you are moving

No matter whether you want to move to a larger apartment or have found a new job and therefore have to leave your current place of residence. Explain to your children why you are leaving the house . Take your time and pay sufficient attention to any worries or fears your loved one may have.

3. Visit the new neighborhood with your children

A drive or walk around the new neighborhood can help your children experience the family move more pleasantly. By visiting your new place of residence, you will familiarize yourself with the new destination.

Go for ice cream together at the local ice cream parlor or spend some time in the playground next to your future apartment. You can also walk all the way to the new school.

If an on-site tour would not be possible (e.g. during a long-distance move or a European move ), you can use Google Earth to take a virtual trip through the new area. You can also use Google Maps to search for cinemas, restaurants and other great places.

4. Throw a great moving party

Whether you’re moving just around the corner or across the country, a moving party is a great way to celebrate the upcoming move with kids . Decorate the apartment with matching decorative elements that reflect the move. Make crafts with your children and enjoy the anticipation of the upcoming move .

5. Let the children plan their new room

If your child has the opportunity to design their new room themselves , then the enthusiasm for the family move will be even greater. You don’t need a big budget for this.

It’s enough if your son or daughter can choose his/her new table lamp or new bed linen. This gives him/her the feeling of being the owner of his/her new room.

A relaxed move with small children? This is child’s play!

It’s important to include your toddlers in one-on-one activities. However, there are also times when it is not so practical or even unsafe to let them participate in the move. Then it is important that you can keep your children busy .

For once, you can give your children a little more screen time than usual. Or provide some fun activities and/or plenty of toys to keep your little playbirds entertained.

Make the family move seem like a big adventure and create a positive and enthusiastic attitude about the move .

Don’t forget to say goodbye to your old apartment: you can write a letter with your children to the next family or go from room to room and let your children tell you what they liked most about each one and what you liked about it will be missed most (and least).

Is the moving date approaching? A set routine also makes the move comfortable for the parents!

A successful family move requires good planning. It is therefore important for you as a parent to prioritize maintaining your usual family routines . Changes to your usual daily routine should be minimized as much as possible.

Maintain normal meal, homework, nap and bedtime times that give your children a sense of predictability and security. Extracurricular activities should also be maintained for as long as possible.

After moving, it is equally important that the familiar routine is reintroduced to the new place of residence. This way, as a parent, you can maintain better control and an overview.
